JENNIFER: SPENCER’S PARENTS WERE CLOWNS IN THE RINGLING BROTHERS AND BARNUM AND BAILEY CIRCUS,AND OWNED A MAGIC SHOP HERE BEFORE IT BECAME A THEATRE. HE STARTED WITH SLEIGHT-OF-HAND AT THE AGE OF FOUR. >> CARDS AND COINS, AND THEN IN MY EARLY TEENS I STARTED GETTING INTERESTED IN ESCAPES, LIKE HOUDINI. SO HE DIDN’T LIVE FOR THE FIRST TIME ON AMERICA’S GOT TALENT. THAT IS AMAZING AND SAYS SO MUCH ABOUT SPENCER AND HIS SKILL SET AS AN ESCAPE ARTIST. BUT THE LEAD UP TO THAT IS TERRIFYING. JENNIFER: TERRIFYING BECAUSE SPENCER ACTUALLY GOT HURT PREPARING FOR HIS ESCAPE. >> BEFORE FILMING I HAD LOVELY RED HAIR, AND SHAVED IT ALL DOWN TO THE SCALP IN ORDER TO GET A COUPLE OF STAPLES PUT IN MY HEAD. Baltimore illusionist returns to 'America's Got Talent' champions season
"America's Got Talent" starts next week, and this year, it will feature a Baltimore magician who has been on the show before.Spencer Horsman is an illusionist known for his escape artist talents. He'll join a worldwide cast on the new "champions" season.It's hard to believe anyone could fit into a water-filled box, let alone escape from it, but it's how Horsman made national TV seven years ago on the show."I was the first escape artist they ever had on the show, and because of that, I made it four out of six rounds. (I) had a lot of new unique escapes that I had created over the years and was fortunate enough that the audiences responded," Horsman said.Horsman got hurt preparing for his escape on live TV."Before filming, I had a lovely plumage of red hair and shaved it all down to the scalp to get a couple of staples put in my head," he said.Horsman and his wife, Caroline, own Illusions Magic Bar and Theater on Charles Street in Federal Hill, with performances every Friday and Saturday night."It definitely beats a 9-to-5," he said.Entertaining is in his blood. Horsman's parents were clowns in the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus and owned a magic shop before it became a theater. He started with sleight-of-hand tricks at the age of 4."So cards and coins and then in my early teens I started getting interested in escapes, like Houdini," Horsman said.His wife will join him on the new season of the primetime talent show Monday."I am officially the person who locks him in his fish tank every single night," Caroline Horsman said."It's extremely flattering to be brought back and compete with the best-of-the-best once again," Spencer Horsman said. "Some are winners from past seasons, some are competitors and some are from other international Got Talent shows.""America's Got Talent" premieres Monday at 8 p.m. on WBAL-TV 11.​
